Transmission Asia-Pacific (TxAP) 2008 is a gathering which conducted by Engage Media and Ruangrupa. This gathering attempt to problematize issues on the internet transmission to facillitate collaboration between videomakers, programmers and web producers. The gathering which supported by Hivos and The Open Society Institute is the continuation of previous meeting in Rome, Italy, 2006.
The main objective of this meeting is to seek the possibility of developing online video distribution as a tool for social justice and media democracy. In the recent years, the initiation spread up like fungus. Various technological developments being organize. The TxAP initiative also seek to expand multimedia activism with increasing access to broadband, new video encoding advances, content management systems, RSS (Really Simple Syndication), p2p (peer to peer) and free softwares. These technologies and projects are converge to democratise access of video distributions on a global level, challenge the dominance of top-down broadcast media and give voice to range the critical social and environmental issues.
The gathering carry out at Tanakita Camping Ground, Sukabumi, Indonesia. Here, the participants tracking every workshops from 19-25th of May, 2008. Tents called Ubuntu, Debian, Theora and Dirac (names after the free and open source software/FOSS), prepares for workshops.
Ubuntu tent is arrange for sessions and meetings involving all participants. In here, a video projector is set up for presentations and screenings of the participants’ works. Debian is a computer lab tent, while Theora is use as another meeting space. A gazebo named Dirac, is arrange for smaller meetings.
During the meeting, participants may use a wireless internet facility which cover the whole area of Tanakita camping ground. However, for those who do not have their own computer, eight computers installed with Linux available at Debian tent. This facility making easy all participants to get in touch with the outside world during the meeting.
License and Copyright
The issues of license and copyright are two basic problems in TxAP 2008 gathering. These matters come into view especially for the artists who often hurtle with legality problem, as they made and distribute their works. In one session of legal problem workshop, Namita, whose originally from Bangalore, India, mention the alternative law to deal with license and copyright issues. For her, all this time license and copyright only benefited world’s major companies. Microsoft and YouTube, for examples, are enjoying enormous prosperity from the license and copyright they gain from their products’ users. She questioning the matter of doubling-up artworks. “Why is copying call stealing while the original never appears?” she ask.
One of the workshop’s participant from Bangladesh, Siraj, making an analogy on the first inventor whose never asks for gold with the creation they made. “If you willing to patent your work, and with the patent you receive a lot of money, then you are escaping history. When Thomas Alfa Eddison invented the lamp, he never asks for money. But why is that that the major companies is so strict to convict people for pirating their products, which can never be call original too, in essential,” said Siraj.
The distribution of videoworks in the internet turn out to be urgent matters that needs to be solve. As a new media, internet is a solution to gives alternative for a wide and interactive distribution of works from videomakers. But, very often that because of legality problem of software’s using, videomakers have difficulties to proliferates their works. Although some commercial companies creates rooms for works distribution, the fact remains, many artists are badly treated by those major companies. To reply to this question, Tiffany and Chris, two video activists from the US and Malaysia, sees a way out with FOSS. For them, FOSS giving the true freedom, whereas it has differences of fake freedom offered by major commercial companies. By using FOSS, videomakers should not be afraid anymore to face the legal problem with the tools they apply to distribute their video. One thing remain a problem, the question of how FOSS developers be capable of convincing videomakers, that their products are more superior than the commercial softwares.
