Rossellini once said, era of the cinema is over and done with the emergence of television. People no longer want to go to the cinema to watch films. Years past, and the death of cinema has not even yet to come. Until today, people still happily head to the cinema. Film has proofed itself as traffic drawers as well as profitable, billion-dollar business. But we can’t deny that television has nevertheless become an important part of people’s lives, especially in this country. In almost every household, rural or urban, television set is now an accessory, not so much of a luxury.

Now, a revolution is about to begin in Indonesian television industry. In the past few days, we’ve seen ad campaign of digital television broadcast made possible by Indonesian Digital TV Consortium. Having been announced since last year, this plan is now finally underway. A pilot digital broadcast was first launched by the government-owned channel TVRI on August 2008, while private-owned television channels had their turn of broadcasting digital on May 20, 2009. In effect, analog broadcast will gradually be left behind although most people can still be using their current TV set equipped with additional set-top box conversion device. Around 900 set-top box are distributed free, which is normally priced 300,000 rupiah each.

With the presence of regulation No. 32 in the year 2002 Regional Autonomy Regulation, this era of digital television broadcast will also bring up more television channels. Principles of locality and the anti-monopoly of broadcast require all television channels to have broadcast bases throughout different regions in the country. One can imagine the many visual productions that will be aired through digital broadcast. It is a good indication to the government, in line to their rigorous effort in initiating the creative industry.

Problem arose, back in the analog broadcast era, when there are too many poor-quality programs. Much to that reason alone we need to start intellectual intervention to television programs. In this digital era, there are already abundant channels that we can use to cultivate awareness in initiating the intervention. But, then again, this intervention will not succeed if visual communities do not posses a strong organizational awareness. The realization that it is indeed crucial to make intellectual works. The realization that history has to be written by our own hands, instead of marked by someone else’s. Television has the ability to reach deep into the hearts of masses and that holds us responsible to provide quality programs. Those programs will in the end help cultivate awareness for political participation among the masses.

For visual communities, the challenge is crystal clear. If we are not triggered to present educating works, who will? All the industry has to care is how much profit they gain, not society’s mind development. So let us provide alternative programs in this era of digital broadcast.
