Video Community Should Attain Their Independency
It was started from the catastrophic Yogyakarta earthquake in 2006, Kampung Halaman came and offered society empowerment trough video. They aim at youngsters. The unique methods made Kampung Halaman managed to build video community in several areas in Indonesia till now. Here is our interview with Dian Herdiany, the Director of Kampung Halaman.
How Kampung Halaman came up with the idea of video community?
We’re started in August 2006. There was an earthquake in Yogya. Three months after the earthquake we’re on track to work with one community in Karangploso, Yogya, one of the earthquake sufferers. We were never meant ourselves to search for earthquake area. At that time, we were conducting a research with friends from the youth group, who call themselves Tanareksa and by chance met them. Our first work is investigating the matter of earthquake donations which at the moment has arrived. And, this youth group felt that they were never entails by the ‘elderly’ to distribute the donations. Worried about the earthquake donations, they began to investigate the flow of the aids.
What you’ve been doing all this moment?
Thus, two months after the earthquake, this youth group was among the first who can get aids access such as food and else. Some of them are students and employees. Through their network, they manage to find helps. But after donations arrived, the ‘elderly’ discharges them. Accidentally, we met them when we were trying to find location for laboratory to develop community-base video for youths. At that point, we invited them to cooperation with the probation period of three months starting from August to November 2006.
How about the development?
At first we only capture our eyes on teenagers, but in the next step we also involving children. Well, our basic goal is to introduce ourselves in Karangploso, so it doesn’t matter anyway. Most of them are girls. Their seniors help as mentors. From the activity three films has been resulted. The works are related to earthquake. After that, we made a screening and these children do all by themselves. In that occasion, we introduce ourselves and asking permission to work for a year in Karangploso. We are allow to do so, and immediately start a program like visual research and else. In the beginning we pass the children to make a video about seven most important things in their life. The result, from these seven things, I felt that five of them are not really their business. Probably it’s their character, thinks not only for their own sake.
After Karangploso, where else?
The second was in Tasikmalaya, West Java. Different from Karangploso, in here we built videocenter in the heart of the city. They were coming from different communities. The challenge was harder since they were from different background.
What difficulties to build a strong network?
First and foremost, we need to make sure that the work is a community agenda not ours. Easy if it is our own agenda, but the main thing is the initiative has to come from the community. Imagine if we work for a year and release them to stand on their own feet. It is not an easy thing to do. They are active and their works are good, but they have problem with management. It is include financial problem when we are not there anymore.
Do you feel happy with what you have done all this time?
If we were talking about the project that running, yes. I can say that we have succeeded. But the problem is, we still have to walk the long path. There are so many things that we haven’t done yet and we expect the best for the future.
