Ariani Darmawan: Independent Bioscope as Struggle PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mirza Jaka Suryana
Tuesday, 12 August 2008 02:51

The independent bioscope emerges as a form of struggle from majority of bioscopes. But what fight it is exactly? Probably none, because speaking about struggle in films which calls independent in Indonesia might be complicated and end up to nowhere. The independent bioscope should be giving alternatives in a way of projecting films, where films that projects are different, hard to access and consider as important in the history of cinema. To provide the alternative watching space, there goes Kineruku. Public in Bandung are open to come, not only to watch movies but also discuss. To discuss more on Kineruku, here is our interview with Ariani Darmawan, the director of Kineruku.

Compare to establish bioscopes, what can the independent bioscope offer to the public?
Essentially, when we talk about bioscope in general conception then it is an establish place, with air conditioner, cozy seats and podium-like stage. We can say this kind of place as true bioscope. At least I consider it that way. There are certain criteria where a place can be call as bioscope, in a way that the audience should feel comfortable inside it. So it’s good for audience and certainly good for the film too. Hence, if I have to speak about independent bioscope then I have to imagine it that way, which is no big difference with general bioscopes. But the different should be in the projection of films.

Are places like Kineruku, Kinoki and else can be call as independent bioscopes?

I rather call it as screening place. It’s an alternative watching space. But to call it as bioscope, a movie theater-like place, I don’t think so. Those places you’ve mentioned aren’t independent bioscopes.

kineruku

What is exactly that audience expect from a bioscope?

Coziness. If I have to go to see the movie I need coziness. True that we projects fims at Kineruku, but I myself can’t think that our place as an ideal place to watch movies. Because Kineruku is not a bioscope.

Is there any place in Indonesia that may call as independent bioscope?

We can mention Kineforum, for example. Firstly, because Kineforum has their own organization, which is outside of the 21 cineplex network. Secondly, because they have regular projections. In Bandung there is Balai Pustaka building, with podium and when we go there to see the movie we always find ourselves in comfort. But the place itself can’t call as bioscope for it’s not regularly programming projections of films.

What the traditional tent cinema phenomenon vis-à-vis the alternative watching space such as Kineruku and Kinoki?

I think there is a big difference. Tent cinema is an outdoor projection. In essence, tent cinema is performed outdoor because it wanted to invites people in the neighborhood.

But it is an alternative space too?
It is. I can say that tent cinema could be ‘the future’ of alternative space. I think watching movies there is more comfortable and the audiences also unlimited. Unlike Kineruku, for instance, where we have a small and limited room. But it has certain weaknesses, especially on the weather: rain and all.

What if Kineruku or Kinoki projects the same films as commercial bioscopes did, would it still be call as alternative watching space?
Hardly. It is the same like we step in to the bar, and watching Spiderman film projected there. For me, place like that is not at all an alternative watching space.

So what the alternative watching space wants to achieve, then?

Alternative has its point at the projections. If the films are different, hard to access and consider as important in the history of world cinema, we may say that it is alternative space. In here we can watch early Russian films of the works of Forum Lenteng and else to brings the joyful and fresh mind in visual world.

layartancep

What impact do you expect from this alternative watching space?
Well I want to bring people close and shares references. You know it’s no use if you have great books, or films but no one interest or never acquaint to it. So I want to make people interest and watch films in a broader perspective. In Kineruku we have program to watch important films in the history of visual world, just for example. But the most important thing is, in alternative watching space we can share opinions, not only watching the film. Place here by no means place only, but turn out to be a space to communicate.

Can we call small commercial bioscope, outside the 21 cineplex network, which is regularly projects sex contain movies as a form of fight to the big commercial bioscopes?
I don’t think so. Because what they do is not a form of fight. They act more as a way to survive. I think it’s another side of industry, that’s all. It’s not alternative.

But what are you fighting, anyway?
What has to fight could be none. But I can say that we fight against the mainstream. As we speak about independent films, I always have questions about their independency. What is it that they’re against of. Is it true to talk about independency for the context of Indonesia, for we know that the film industry in Indonesia itself is not firm. The film industry here is still not right. So it is very tricky to talk about independent and alternative, in that way.
